Following the death of Annisul Huq, the Local Government Division issued a notice on Dec 1 declaring vacant the post of Dhaka North City mayor. The Election Commission is now bound to hold bypolls for the position by Feb 28.

“The local government ministry has requested us to organise polling in the 18 new wards. So there is no restriction on holding the election in those areas,” Helaluddin told reporters on Sunday after wrapping up a meeting on security measures for the local government election due on Dec 28.

“The commission will call a meeting in a day or two to decide on how to hold the polls,” he said.

“The Election Commission will ensure a free and fair election,” Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda said at the meeting on Sunday with law-enforcement agencies over UP and municipality polls.

On Dec 28, polls will be held to elect local government representatives in 133 areas.
