Police have identified the victims as 20-year-old Shahbab Rahman and 18-year-old Mahi Ahmad.

Around 6:30pm on Thursday, a group of miscreants left the scene after hacking the two outside a hostel of the Moulvibazar Government High School in the north-eastern district, according to witnesses.

They were rushed to the Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital where doctors declared them dead.

Shahbab studied at grade XI in Moulvibazar Government College while Mahi was due to sit for the Secondary School Certificate or SSC examinations from the Moulvibazar Government High School, said Moulvibazar police OC Sohel Ahmad.

Locals said they worked for the Moulvibazar unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling Awami League, a claim that the unit’s president Asaduzzaman Rony has dismissed.

“The deceased students never belonged to any committee of the Chhatra League. They could have been supporters,” he said.
