Police came up with the claim at its Minto Road media office in the capital on Wednesday after arresting one of the suspected killers in Kalachandpur on Tuesday night.

Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Monirul Islam told the media that the arrested suspect, Helal Uddin, 30, admitted he was a ‘professional killer’ and that he carried out the murder of Siddique on orders from one of his friends, a JCD leader living in Europe.

Monirul did not give details of the expatriate leader of the BNP’s student wing.

He said Helal also acted like a leader of the organisation, but held no post in it.

Four masked gunmen shot dead Siddique at his MS Munshi Overseas office at Banani on the night of Nov 14. Three others were also shot and injured by the assailants.

Monirul said Helal planned the murder a week before the incident after receiving instructions from Europe.

He said Helal and another of his associates waited outside the office while four entered it.

Two of the assailants, ‘Saddam’ and ‘Pichchi Alamin’, have been identified, the police officer said.

Monirul, however, said Helal did not say anything about the motive behind the killing.

The ADC indicated it could be a robbery.

“Helal said he had not been paid for the murder. He said he had been told that the businessman kept money in his office,” Monirul said and added police would ask for 10 days to quiz Helal in custody.

He also said the assailants shot 25 to 26 rounds of bullets from weapons supplied by Helal, who is accused in several other cases.

Police have seized five of the six firearms used in the murder from Helal, he said.

“The assailants came to murder Siddique and there was no money at his office on that day,” he said.

The police officer said Helal and the five others had not been involved together in any incident before the murder of Siddique.
