Stationmaster of Joydebpur Railway Junction Md Shahjahan Mia told bdnews24.com that the accident took place at Baktarpur level-crossing around 2 am on Friday when the northern region-bound ‘Lalmoni Express’ crashed into the out-of-service truck, killing Nur Alam Sharif, assistant driver of the train, on the spot and injuring 15 passengers, including the train driver.
Sharif, son of Momin Sharif, hails from Shasha village in Alfadanga upazila of Faridpur district.
The stationmaster said the injured train driver and passengers were taken to Kaliakair Upazila Health Complex.
The railway communications between capital Dhaka and the country’s northwest districts were disrupted for almost six hours after the accident.
Ibrahim Chowdhury, a warehouse inspector of Kaliakair Fire Service, said an electric-pole carrying truck of Royal Group went out of order on the level-crossing when a train coming from Dhaka hit it killing Sharif and injuring 15 others.
Sub-Inspector Mohammad Raqibul Islam of Joydebpur police post said the train services on the route returned to normalcy around 8 am after the accident-hit locomotive and its coaches were salvaged from the track.
