BNP leader, former deputy speaker Md Akhtar Hamid Siddiqui passes away

Former Deputy Speaker and BNP leader Md Akhtar Hamid Siddiqui has died in a Dhaka hospital.

The 71-year-old was suffering from lung cancer and breathed his last at 12:10pm on Sunday at the United Hospital, the party’s Health Affairs Secretary Fawaz Hossain told bdnews24.com.

A member of the BNP chief’s advisory council, Siddiqui is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir have conveyed condolences to the bereaved family members.

The party said a funeral prayer will be held in front of its Naya Paltan headquarters in the afternoon.

A second funeral prayer will be held on Monday at the National Parliament premises, said son Parvez Arefin Siddiqui.

The mortal remains will be then taken to his native Naogaon, where he will be buried later that day after another funeral prayer, he said.

A four-time lawmaker from the Naogaon-3 constituency, Siddiqui was born in 1947 in the northern district.

Siddiqui, who served as the deputy speaker of the eighth parliament, joined politics after graduating from the University of Dhaka.
