The incident occurred around 7:45am on Wednesday, said RAB-8 Commander Wing Commander Hassan Emon Al-Razib.

RAB says the two victims, Yusuf Fakir and Ruhul Amin, are members of the ‘Forest Robber Abbas Gang’. They offered no further details on the two.

“For the past fifteen days some robbers who split off from various gangs have joined together to kidnap and ransom fishermen from various places in the Sundarbans and the Bay of Bengal,” said Al-Razib.

“RAB received a tip-off on Wednesday morning that eight to ten robbers were making preparations near Katla creek. A team was dispatched to the area. The robbers caught sight of the team and opened fire. After a 45-minute shootout, the robbers fled deeper into the woods.

RAB then recovered two bodies from the scene.

“Local fisherman identified them as members of the Forest Bandit Abbas Gang.”

Seven firearms and 124 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the scene, the RAB official said.
