The case was brought before Jessore’s Senior Judicial Magistrate on Tuesday by Hira Khatun, a resident of Jessore town.

The court has taken the matter under consideration and ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation to investigate it, said Khatun’s lawyer Ajit Kumar Das.

Police claim that Khatun’s son and another detainee escaped after their arrest.

The sixteen accused in the case are – Sub Inspectors HM Shahidul Islam, Amir Hossain and Hasanur Rahman, Assistant Sub Inspectors Rajan Gazi, Selim Munshi, Biplob Hossain, Selim Ahmed, Constables Arifuzzaman, Rafiqul Islam, Md Ramzan, Habibur Rahman, Abu Bakr, Mizan Sheikh, Mahmudur Rahman, Rajibul Islam and Tokon Hossain.

“Around 10am on Apr 5 my son Sayeed, 18, and his friend Shaon went to the Jessore Municipal Park,” Khatun said. “Around 12pm, a man named Sabbir Hossain called me on my phone and said police had detained them.”

She said she went to the park and saw Sayeed and Shaon being led into a police car.

“I ran to the car to ask why they were being arrested. They told me to contact the police station. I went to the police station and waited until evening, but they wouldn’t let me enter.”

“Two policemen called me in and demanded Tk 200,000 for my son’s release. Two days later we hear Sayeed and Shaon have escaped. Later we heard police had filed a case against them. The case stated they had escaped.”

Police did not help her when she inquired about her son’s whereabouts. On May 30, she arranged a press conference at the Jessore Press Club, asking for information about her son.

She fears her son and his friend have been murdered.

“The allegation is completely false and baseless,” said Jessore Additional Superintendent of Police Salahuddin Sikder. Some quarter is unfolding a scheme to try to cause trouble for police. But as the court has ordered an investigation, it will be conducted and the true details will emerge.”

Kotowali Police Station Inspector Abul Bashar Miah toldbdnews24.com that on Apr 4 that a man named Pappa had been killed at the Jessore Town Hall field.

“Sayeed and Shaon are suspects in that case. They are also suspects in at least 10 other cases, with some involving murder charges.”

Police detained the two on Apr 5, he said.

Police took them along on a raid in an attempt to catch the other suspects in Pappa’s murder and the two managed to escape, he said.
