"The detained Bangladesh workers are awaiting deportation now," Faisal Ahmed, an official of the Bangladesh embassy working in Dammam, told bdnews24.com on Wednesday.

He said the detained Bangladeshis were sent to a deportation jail. "They would be sent back within a week," Faisal said.

Saudi police detained them in a drive conducted from Monday through to Wednesday, Faisal said.

"They were working as suppliers in several companies without permission, which is a punishable offence under the Saudi laws. The worker and the employer can face fines of up to 50,000 Riyal for this," he said.

He said a foreign worker needs the permission of his or her previous employer in case of changing job.

Saudi authorities conduct drives against foreign workers who illegally stay in the country after performing Hajj.

The post-Hajj drive this year will continue for around a month more, the authorities said.
