UN resident coordinator's Dhaka stint extended over Rohingya crisis

The tenure of the UN Resident Coordinator Robert Watkins in Dhaka has been extended for what officials say smooth relief operations for the Rohingya refugees.

The UNDP administrator extended Watkins’ term "by a month" so that he can continue leading the UN’s relief programme, sources both at the foreign ministry and the UNDP told bdnews24.com.

Watkins was scheduled to leave Dhaka on Sept 23.

More than 410,000 Rohingyas have fled into Bangladesh since the Aug 25 violence in the Myanmar’s troubled Rakhine State. Myanmar denies their citizenship.
