"He is now in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) of the BIRDEM," fellow naturalist Mobarak Hossain told bdnews24.com, quoting his wife Dr Devi Sharma.

The 88-year-old author of over 30 books was taken to the hospital on Aug 18 and was placed in the critical care medicine unit in the hospital, Mobarak said. Earlier, on Jul 23, he was taken to the hospital with similar old-age complications.

Mobarak said, "A medical board was formed on Wednesday which is supervising the treatment. He has swollen legs, and the dialysis is on."

"His lungs are relatively clear now. He can recognise people, but doctors are not saying he is out of danger," he added.

Born in 1929 in Sylhet, Sharma received Bangla Academy award in 1987 and Ekushey Padak in 2015.

One of his famous books is 'Shyamoli Nishorgo' or 'Green Nature'. The quotes Sharma used to describe plants, flowers and fruits range from folklores like 'Maymensingh Gitika' to works of poets Jibanananda Das and Jasimuddin.

His other books include 'Samajtontre Bosobas' or 'Living in Socialism', 'Jiboner Shesh Nei' or 'No End To Life', 'Phoolgulo Jeno Kotha or 'Each Flower Is A Word' and 'Biggan Shikkha O Daiboddhotar Nirikh' or 'Science Education and Our Responsibilities'.
