The shootout occurred near Shipbur village early Monday, said Islami University Police Station OC Ratan Sheikh. The victim, 26-year-old Enamul Haq, was a resident of the village.

Enamul was arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of college student Sagar was found in a tank near Enamul’s home on Saturday.

“Enamul confessed to the crime and named Shipon as an accomplice. A police team took Enamul along on the raid to capture Shipon. Some criminals opened fire on the team and Enamul fled. The criminals fled after police returned fire,” OC Ratan said.

Enamul’s bullet-ridden body was found after the gunfight and taken to Kushtia Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Police recovered a pistol, cartridges and a sharp weapon from the scene of the shootout, said Ratan.

Four police personnel, including SI Rashed, were injured in the firefight, he said.

Sagar Saha, a student of Khater Ali Degree College, went missing on Aug 16. His body was found on Aug 19.
