Ground gives way under rail tracks amid floods in Lalmonirhat

Train service between Lalmonirhat’s Bhotmari Station and Burimari has been stopped after flood waters swept away the soil beneath the tracks.

The incident occurred on Aug 13, said Lalmonirhat Railway Divisional Engineer Md Ariful Islam.

“The ground beneath a nearly 100-foot stretch on the rail track has given way,” he said.

Rail authorities initially planned to set up a temporary rail bridge, but the idea faced resistance from locals who demanded the tracks be shored up by more soil, Islam said.

“We are unable to do that now because of the current. We will do so once the water recedes.”
