9-year-old girl found hanging from ceiling fan in Dhaka

A 9-year-old girl has been found hanging from a ceiling fan inside her house at Dhaka's Khilgaon.

Mahin Akter was a student of class III at the Khilgaon Model School.

"Mahin was home alone for 10/15 minutes Saturday afternoon when her mother, Moyna, was outside," said Mahin's father Abdul Quaiyum.

"My wife went to her mother's place nearby," he said.

On return, she found the door locked from inside. The door was broken and Mahin was found hanging from the ceiling fan, said Quaiyum quoting his wife.

Mahin was declared dead after being taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

"She (Mahin) was gleeful when I brought her home from school. I don't believe she has hung herself," Quaiyum said.

Khilgaon police OC Kazi Mainul Islam said: "It is unlikely for a child of that age to commit suicide. We are looking into the matter."

In a separate incident, an under-aged construction worker has died falling off an under construction building in Dhanmondi.

The dead, 15-year-old Nazmul Islam, was working on the fifth floor of the seven-storey building.

Around 2:30pm, he fell off and was declared dead when he was taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said Bacchu Mia, a sub-inspector at DMCH police outpost.
