He alleged police stood still when he came under the latest attack in front of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University around 6pm on Friday.

He and some five other members of the secular platform were allegedly injured in an attack on them following a demonstration for flood-hit people at Shahbagh on Thursday afternoon.

On July 16, a car carrying the Mancha spokesperson was attacked by Bangladesh Chhatra League activists when he was leaving the Dhaka metropolitan magistrate’s court after attending the hearing of a case against him.

Sarker and Ganajagaran Mancha activist Sanatan Ullash had turned themselves into the court on that day on charges of defaming Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

A BCL leader earlier threatened to ‘beat Sarker like a dog’.

The Mancha spokesperson told bdnews24.com on Friday that he and eight to 10 others were attacked in front of the BSMMU when they were returning home.

“The attackers first pelted brickbats. Then they shoved us to the ground and punched and kicked us,” he said.

He said there was a policeman in plainclothes at the scene who later told Sarker that he could not do anything because he was alone.

“We informed the Shahbagh Police Station at once,” the Mancha spokesperson added.

He could not identify the attackers but said they were like those of Thursday’s attackers.

“They said the same thing that we are doing excesses,” he said.

The Ganajagaran Mancha is scheduled to distribute relief among flood-hit people in northern districts on Saturday.

But now, after the attack, Sarker said he was considering the option to cancel the programme.

Shahbagh Police Station Inspector Zafar Ali said he heard about the incident.

“We are yet to identify those who carried out the attack,” he said.

Sarker earlier started a case over the first attack on Thursday.
