The latest round of voter list updates showed 77,393 more women applied to become new voters than men, said Election Commission Assistant Secretary Md Mosharraf Hossain.

As many as 1,261,835 men and 1,339,228 women have applied, according to data from the commission.

However, there may be ‘small changes’ to the numbers as the registration is completed in three steps, the EC official said. The final count would be available at a later date.

Despite more applications from women, the updates will not change the voter list in terms of gender, which has more men than women.

The country’s total population was 161.75 million, with 81 million men and 80.75 million women, as of Jan 1, according to Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics.

Currently, 101,681,476 people are registered to vote -- with approximately 51.38 million male voters and 50.3 million female voters. There are currently 1,085,461 more men registered to vote.
