Officer Rahul Patwary, Stamford University student Billal Hossain Mridul and driver Md Selim Mia were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after the incident around 9pm on Saturday, police said.

A bullet hit Patwary to the left side of the chest, Mridul was shot in the leg, and Selim received bullet injuries in his back, said DMCH police camp Sub-Inspector Bachchu Mia.

Miscreants opened fire on a DB team that went to Jurain in the evening, DMP spokesperson Masudur Rahman told bdnews24.com.

After visiting Patwary at the hospital, DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia told reporters that the officer was out of danger.

He said the drive in Jurain was part of a security operation to thwart untoward incidents in August, the month of mourning.

"DB AC Rahul's team surrounded an arms dealer following a tip-off. Another dealer opened fire on them, and the miscreants fled the scene. The drive to arrest them is under way," he said.

Police said Mridul was working as a source of Rahul Patwary.

Driver Selim was having a cup of tea at a local shop when the bullet hit him, SI Bachchu Mia said.
