Man to face police grilling again for ‘raping’ stepdaughter

A court has granted the police two more days to interrogate private TV station sound engineer Arman Hossain Sumon, arrested on charges of raping his stepdaughter.

After two days of remand on Sunday, he was produced before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Satyabrata Shikder who granted the police the fresh remand for further questioning.

Sub-Inspector Mohammad Nazmul Nishat of the social media monitoring team of Police's Counterterrorism and Transnational Crimes Unit, who is investigating the case, sought 10 days to quiz him.

Sumon was arrested on July 12 after his stepdaughter started a case at Ramna Police Station the previous day.

She brought the charges against him under the Prevention of Oppression Against Women and Children Act and Section 57 of the ICT Act.

The 20-year-old alleged in the case that Sumon raped her for the first time nine years ago and took photos of the incident.

Sumon continued to rape her and threatened to publish the photos if she disclosed it to anyone.

He sent the photos to one of the victim's friends through Facebook recently after she left home to stay with her aunt, she added.

According to the case dossier, Sumon married the alleged victim’s mother in 2005 after her mother had divorced her father. The plaintiff started to stay in Sumon’s house a year later.

Sumon raped her at their Mohammadpur house in her mother’s absence when she was 12 years old in 2008.
