War crimes tribunal's chairman Justice Anwarul Haque passes away

The International Crimes Tribunal's chairman Justice Anwarul Haque has died.

The 61-year-old breathed his last Thursday afternoon while being treated at Dhaka's Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University or BSMMU Hospital.
 
A High Court judge, Haque was appointed as head of the International Crimes Tribunal-1 in 2012.
 
In 2015, the two tribunals were merged into one, when Justice Haque was appointed to head the unified tribunal responsible for trying 1971 war criminals.
 
ICT Registrar Shahidul Alam said Justice Haque was suffering from lung cancer.
 
"He was admitted to the ICU of BSMMU Hospital on Jul 5 after being treated at the cancer hospital in Singapore," he told bdnews24.com.
 
Born in 1956, Haque graduated in law from the University of Dhaka and started practicing law in 1980. 
 
The next year, he joined the judicial service as an assistant judge and gradually became a district and sessions judge in 1997.
 
In 2010, he was appointed as an additional judge of the High Court and a judge in 2012.
 
He also headed the Governing Board of the SAARC Arbitration Council and has been a member of the Commonwealth Association of Legislative Counsel since 1988.
