Heavy rains in the hill districts since Monday have caused landslides that resulted in massive casualties. As of Wednesday night, the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief’s official count of deaths stood at 150.

The landslides killed 105 people in Rangamati, 29 in Chittagong, six in Bandarban, two in Cox’s Bazar and one in Khagrachari. Seven others have been killed by fallen trees, collapsed walls and flooding.

All municipal councillors and Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) have been ordered to compile a list of homes and residents that stand the r9isk of being hit by landslides, said Executive Magistrate Saiful Islam.

A meeting of district officials had been held at the administration’s headquarters on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the removal of people from at-risk areas.

“The administration is taking several initiatives to relocate people from dangerous areas,” Magistrate Islam said. “In addition to the lists we are also taking steps to secure housing and temporary food for the victims of the disaster.”

Five teams led by an executive magistrate will be working in Cox’s Bazar city, he said.

An initial list has identified 1,000 families living in high-risk areas in Cox’s Bazar, Islam said.
