The altercation occurred at the Sadar Upazila’s South Choromshura on Saturday morning, said Munshiganj Sadar Police Station OC Yunus Ali.

“The clash erupted between two factions of the local administration,” he said. “Additional police personnel have been deployed to the area to bring the situation under  control.”

The deceased, 22-year old Masud Dhali, was shot and killed. One of the injured, Md Tarif, was also shot and has been brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment. Another, Islam Dewan, has been admitted to Munshiganj General Hospital.

According to locals there had been a long-standing struggle for dominance between supporters of former Chorkewar Parishad Chairman Afsar Uddin Bhuiyan and current Chairman Akhtaruzzaman Jibon.

The two sides were involved in a clash on Saturday morning after Afsar’s supporters attacked Choromshura village.

According to Akhtaruzzaman Jibon, who is also the district Awami League assistant chairman, Afsar’s supporters led a sudden attack on the village around 7am with guns and crude bombs.

Sadar Upazila Awami League Chairman Afsar Uddin Bhuiyan, however denied the charge.

“They murdered Masud  and are trying to blame us for his death. Jibon’s supporters also vandalized houses in South Choromshura’s Madborkandi village.”

Locals say the two factions have clashed several times in the past two years, resulting in property damage. Cases have been filed with local police over the violence.
