The hour-long meeting took place at Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital's Agargaon on Thursday.

CEC Huda told bdnews24.com later that it was a courtesy call by the Indian high commissioner.

"We have spoken to many ambassadors. In continuation of this (interaction), the Indian high commissioner came for the first time," he said.

He said they discussed preparations and timing of the next parliamentary elections, and the polls already held by the current Election commission in the meeting.

"We've said that we are fully prepared for the national election. It will be held in time," said Huda.

Shringla said in the meeting that the elections held by the current EC in past three months were 'good', according to the CEC.

In line with the Constitution, the next general election is slated to be held 90 days before Jan 28, 2019.

India helped the Awami League come to power again in the 10th parliamentary election which the BNP boycotted, leaders of the opposition party allege.

The CEC's aide Mazharul Islam said it was the first meeting between Shringla and the new CEC.

No other election commissioner or EC Secretariat official was present in the meeting.

Shringla was accompanied by the first secretary of the Indian High Commission and another official.
