Afia Jain Chaity, a student of zoology at Dhaka University, died in hospital on Thursday. The university’s Acting Proctor Prof Amjad Ali started the case with police that night against nine people, including Quasem.

"MA Quasem was brought to the police station and was shown arrested in the case," said DMP Assistant Commissioner Abdullahil Kafi.

The other accused are Prof Dr ABM Abdullah, Kashem Yusuf, Dr Mortuza, Lt Col ASM Matlebur Rahman, Dr Masuma Parvin, Dr Jahanara Begum Mona, Dr Maksud Parvin and Dr Tapan Kumar Boiragi.

Afia's classmates blamed the hospital authorities for "treating Afia for blood cancer although she was suffering from dengue."

They vandalised the private hospital located on Dhaka's Green Road on Thursday after Afia's death.

"Doctors earlier said Chaity had blood cancer. Then they said she had dengue," one of her classmates told reporters after the ruckus.

Dr ABM Abdullah, who was treating Chaity, said they had diagnosed her with leukaemia (blood cancer).

"The patient was critical when she was brought in. She died before we could even start treatment properly at the ICU. There wasn't any fault in the treatment," he said.

Chaity came from Chapainawabganj and was a resident of the university's Shamsunnahar Hall.

AC Kafi said the body was sent to her village home as the family members were opposing an autopsy.
