1 killed in Meherpur police 'shootout'

An unidentified man has been killed in an alleged encounter with police at Meherpur's Gangni Upazila.

The shootput was reported from Chokhtola village on Kushti-Meherpur road around 2am Thursday, said Gangni Police OC Anwar Hossain.

He said the police rushed to the spot when told about a gang of robbers felling trees to block vehicles on the road.

"The gang began shooting after sensing our presence. Some of them were hurt when police fired back. We took one of the injured to a hospital where doctors declared him dead," said OC Anwar.

Two policemen, SI Bakhtiar Hossain and Constable Abdul Haque, were hospitalised when injured in the shooting, he said.

Two crude bombs, a shutter gun, ammunition, two sharp knives and ropes have been recovered from the location.

The body of the unidentified man has been sent to the morgue at Meherpur Sadar Hospital.
