He says international sanctions on top junta officials bar Bangladesh from wider engagement with the Myanmar military
Nowshad Islam, managing director of Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company or BAPEX, inaugurated the test extraction from well 2 of the field on Thursday.
He said the state-owned exploration company was not sure how much gas can be lifted from the well before analysing the data. "But we are sure that it's commercially successful.”
The government started drilling wells after acquiring five acres of land in Sundolpur and Shahzadpur villages in 2004 after finding gas some 3,235 metres below the surface.
BAPEX conducted the drilling project at Tk 629 million, according to Sundolpur-Shahzadpur Gas Field-2 Project Director Alamgir Hossain.
