The ‘shootout’ occurred in the Hazipur area of Kasba Upazila around 4am on Saturday, said Kasba Police Station OC Md Mohiuddin.

The victim has been identified as 35-year old Jahirul Islam aka ‘Kala Jahir’, who hailed from the Upazila’s Kamalpur village.

Police arrested Jahir near his home on Friday morning, OC Mohiuddin told bdnews24.com. After his interrogation, a police team took him along with them on a raid to track down a cache of weapons at Hazaripur area.

“Jahir’s accomplices, who were lying in wait, noticed the police team and began firing upon them,” he said. “Police returned fire in self-defence. After the shootout Jahir’s bullet-ridden corpse was recovered from the spot.”

Three policemen have been injured in the ‘shootout’ and received treatment at a local medical centre, said OC Mohiuddin.

Police said that 12 crude bombs, two sharp weapons, a firearm and five cartridges were found at the scene.

OC Mohiuddin said Jahir is accused in six cases of robbery.
