Locals caught Shamiul Islam and handed him over to police around 11am on Thursday, said Gaibandha police OC AKM Mehedi Hasan.

His wife 30-year-old Nazma Begum and daughter six-month-old 'Shamima' were found dead inside their house at a village near the district town.

Neighbours found Shamiul with his hands and legs tied up and his wife and the infant dead inside the house after they broke in there hearing Shamiul scream in the morning.

Shamiul said some men stormed into his house the previous night and killed his wife and daughter.

"His son, 11-year-old Nazmul, however, told neighbours that Shamiul killed the two by suffocating them with a pillow. The child hid himself under a blanket," said the OC.

Someone came to the house in the morning and tied up his father, the OC said quoting Nazmul.

Jahidul Islam Jhontu, Chairman of Bollomjhor Union Council in Gaibandha, said Shamiul has three wives; Nazma being the third.

"His first wife works at an apparel factory in Dhaka while the second one lives with her parents," he added.
