President David Granger welcomed the non-resident ambassador and hoped that relations with Bangladesh would be strengthened in the coming days.

Guyana is a former British colony sandwiched between Venezuela and Surinam.

The country has rich reserves of bauxite, gold and timber, though it has struggled to overcome poverty. Most of the country is covered in tropical rainforests.

The new ambassador conveyed the greetings of President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and also extended their “earnest invitation” to visit Bangladesh in near future.

He said his prime objective was “to strengthen cooperation and overall relationship of the two countries”, according to a statement issued by the Bangladesh embassy in Washington.

“Bangladesh and Guyana have always been cooperating in all international forums, particularly in the United Nations and in the Commonwealth of nations.”

He urged both countries to work together on multilateral issues like climate change.  He also requested the President to send a delegation to Bangladesh to explore further cooperation opportunities.

The President assured the Ambassador of all possible cooperation in carrying out his duties.
