The deadlines for filing nominations for posts of chairman, reserved and general members is Dec 1. The commission will scrutinise nominations on Dec 3 and 4.

The last day to withdraw nominations is Dec 11. The local government ministry had previously announced the date for the polls.

The Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed announced the schedule on Sunday.

Citizens have only voted once for polls in the district council -- in 1989 for the three Chittagong Hill Tract districts.

In 1988, military dictator HM Ershad introduced the district council law, with the provision of government-appointed chairmen.

The Awami League administration in 2000 amended the law allowing elected representatives.

In December 2011, the government appointed district-level Awami League leaders as administrators for 61 district councils.

The polls are being held as the term of those administrators have expired.
