European Parliament supports Bangladesh in its fight against terrorism

The South Asia Delegation of the European Parliament (EP) has discussed Bangladesh’s security situation in its monthly meeting and vowed to stand by the country following the terror attack.

Twenty people including nine Italian, seven Japanese, an Indian and a Bangladeshi American, were killed in theJuly 1 terrorist attack on a Dhaka cafe. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the deadliest terror attack in Bangladesh’s history.

The foreign ministry said the Head of Division of the South Asia Unit of the European External Action Service (EEAS) Maria Castello-Fernandez in the meeting said the European Parliament supported Bangladesh in its endeavour to fight against terrorism.

Referring to the EP’s resolutions and the EU statements, she said that “the EU delegation in Dhaka has been requested to engage in dialogues.”

Bangladesh Ambassador in Brussels Ismat Jahan expressed condolences on behalf of the people of Bangladesh as well as from the government to the bereaved family members of the innocent victims.

“It is reassuring that the EU also joined with Bangladesh to cooperate,” she said.

The meeting also discussed the illegal migration to Europe from the South Asian countries. According to them, people from Pakistan and Afghanistan mainly attempt to migrate to Europe illegally.
