France has deplored the terrorist attack in Dhaka in the “strongest terms”, and expressed its “solidarity” with Bangladesh.
“Terrorism is a global scourge. France is determined to strengthen international cooperation to combat terrorism everywhere,” the French foreign ministry said in a statement on Saturday.
Paris has also offered condolences to the families of the victims.
British Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Hugo Swire took to Twitter to express his shocks. “Utterly condemn appalling and senseless #BangladeshAttack,” he tweeted.
At least 20 hostages, mostly foreigners, and two police officers were killed by gunmen who in an unprecedented attack stormed into a restaurant on Friday evening at the diplomatic heart of Gulshan.
The overnight hostage crisis ended on Saturday morning after an hour-long operation by military commandos.
Six terrorists were killed and another was captured alive, according to the Army Headquarters.
