The finance minister has proposed an allocation of Tk 1 billion to provide additional facilities for the physically challenged people in the budget for the next financial year.
AMA Muhith presented a Tk 3.14 trillion national budget for the 2016-17 fiscal in Parliament on Thursday.
In the budget speech, he said, “For next year, we will make special arrangements in transports like trains, water vessels or city buses for the benefit of these people."
Saying ‘certain steps were taken for persons having neurodevelopmental disabilities’, he added, “Steps will be taken to make public toilets and government buildings adaptable for the use of people (with disabilities).
“I propose to allocate Tk 1 billion for creating these additional facilities (for them),” he said.
Muhith said the total number of physically challenged people in Bangladesh currently ‘stands at about 15 million, which probably includes the invalid as well as elderly men and women’.
