Three dead after strong winds cause destruction as cyclone Roanu approaches Bangladesh

Gusty winds caused by an approaching cyclone Roanu has uprooted trees and destroy houses leaving three people dead in the coastal Bangladesh districts of Bhola and Patuakhali.

The Met office said that the cyclonic storm was centred about 135 km of south of Patuakhali’s Payra port at 6am on Saturday and it’s expected to make a landfall sometime in the afternoon.

Over 50 people have been reported injured in coastal Bangladesh as strong winds have left hundreds of houses damaged and trees uprooted.

Bangladesh Red Crescent reported squally weather at the island district of Bhola and said two people were killed there.

Meanwhile, another death has been reported from Patuakhali.

A ceaseless drizzle coupled with gusty winds have been reported from across the country including the capital Dhaka as cyclone Roanu neared the coastal area.

The cyclone is expected to cross the Barisal and Chittagong coast sometime in the afternoon, said the weather office.
