Government all set to tackle cyclone Roanu fallout, says disaster management minister

The government has taken ‘all kind of preparations’ to handle the fallout of cyclone Roanu, says Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury.

Speaking at a media briefing on Saturday, he said that around 500,000 people in the 14 coastal districts have been moved to safe shelters.

“Another 200,000 to 300,000 people will be evacuated. Those who live near the cyclone shelters naturally leave homes at the last moment,” said Chowdhury.

He said that they have already allotted Tk 400,000 and 2,000 tonnes of rice for each of the coastal districts.

The minister said that around 100,000 disaster response personnel have been kept on stand by from the Ansar and VDP, Cyclone Preparedness Programme committees, Red Crescent Society and other agencies as well as the local Awami League activists.

Disaster Management Secretary Md Shah Kamal said that the administration chiefs of the coastal districts have placed a demand of 300 to 500 tonnes of rice and a cash assistance of Tk 1 million to 2 million each.
