The ‘Free Shafik Rehman Campaign’ said in a media release that Shafik’s son Sumit Rehman addressed the rally at Altab Ali Park on Wednesday.

The speakers condemned Bangladesh government’s ‘interference in the freedom of speech’ and demanded that the government withdraw all ‘false cases’ against journalists.

Shafik Rehman, a former BBC staffer, is a British-Bangladeshi.

He was arrested in Dhaka on Saturday on charges of plotting abduction and murder of Prime Minister Sheikih Hasina’s son Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed Joy in the US.

The ‘Free Shafik Rehman Campaign’ said it would push the US through its embassy in the UK to provide specific explanation on the accusation against Shafik.

Shamsul Alam Liton, an organiser of Shafik Rehman-founded ‘Support Life UK’ presided over the rally.

The senior journalist’s son Sumit alleged his father, who also worked as an accountant, was arrested for working on Joy’s financial dealings.

He also said an e-petition was launched to get the issue raised in the British Parliament. He said 10,000 UK citizens’ signatures would be needed for this.
