District and Sessions Judge SM Quddus announced the verdict on Monday.

Public Prosecutor Khandker Abdul Mannan said the convict, Md Sharif, had confessed to his crime and said he had killed his wife because he suspected her of having an extramarital affair.

According to the case files, 40-year-old Sharif had struck his speech and hearing impaired wife, Shilpi Akter, and her sister Shila Akter with sharp weapons at their house at Jadurchar Hemayetpur in the early hours of Jun 8, 2014.

Shilpi died of her injuries but Shila, also speech impaired and wife of Sharif’s brother ‘Tariqul’, survived.

Sharif said in his confession that he tried to murder Shila also because he suspected her of helping her sister her affair.

Shilpi’s mother filed a case against Sharif and three others, but the investigation officer Savar police Sub-Inspector Abul Kazi only named Sharif in the chargesheet.

The convict was seen trembling after hearing the verdict at the witness dock on Monday.

As the main witness Shila was speech impaired, a sign language expert from the Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) helped in recording her statement.
