Justice has been served by upholding Mir Quasem’s death sentence, says attorney general

Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mir Quasem Ali deserved the death penalty for the atrocities he committed during the 1971 Liberation War, says Attorney General Mahbubey Alam.

His comments came after the Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the death sentence awarded to the former al-Badr commander by the International Crime Tribunal. “We are satisfied with the verdict.”

Speaking to reporters at his office, the attorney general also touched on the issue raised over the comments made on the hearing of Mir Quasem’s appeal hearing.

“Those who think they are the ones who are taking forward the war crimes trial, they are wrong. This would not have happened if someone like Sheikh Hasina was not at the helm of the executive division.

“They need to keep in mind that the trials are an outcome of a political decision. Trial of war criminals was Awami League’s electoral pledge,” said Alam.
