“A proposal has been forwarded to the prime minister. Fares will be hiked from next month if approved,” he said while speaking at a programme at Bangladesh Railways headquarters.

The minister’s announcement comes two days after the Parliamentary Standing Committee for Ministry of Railways recommended a hike.

“The proposal forwarded to the prime minister suggests a 7.8 percent increase,” Railways Secretary Md Feroz Salah Uddin told reporters.

He said that the move aimed to cut down on losses incurred by Bangladesh Railway. “From now on, fares will be adjusted every year, but it will be not more than 7.5 percent if oil prices remain steady.”
