The central bank’s spokesperson Subhankar Saha told bdnews24.com the demi official (DO) letter was sent on Wednesday.

“The governor in the DO letter has urged the IGP to investigate the matter and take departmental action (against the accused police officer),” he told bdnews24.com.

A Governor Secretariat official also confirmed that Atiur Rahman, in the letter, called for punishment of Mohammadpur police Sub-Inspector Masud Shikdar.

Shikdar allegedly tried to extort money from Bangladesh Bank communications department official Golam Rabbi while he, Shikdar, was on duty in Mohammadpur on Saturday night.

Rabbi claimed that the SI had asked him to pay up or face prosecution as a Yaba dealer and addict.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Mohammadpur zone Assistant Commissioner Hafiz Al Faruk has been entrusted with the enquiry into Rabbi's allegations.

Shikdar was taken off duty from Mohammadpur Police Station and attached to the office of the DMP’s Tejgaon zone Deputy Commissioner on Monday after primary investigation found proof to back the allegations.

Earlier, Shikdar had told bdnews24.com that Rabbi had not been dragged to the police station in view of his social position as an official of the central bank.

"We had detained him (Rabbi) because he failed to explain what he was doing in that area so late at night," Shikdar said.
