On Wednesday, the Supreme Court has put the seal on the death sentence of the Jamaat-e-Islami chief, who orchestrated the killing of Bangladesh’s best brains in 1971 through his ruthless militia, the Al Badr.

In an instant reaction, Nizami’s chief counsel Khandaker Mahbub Hossain said: “We will act on our client's instructions.”

The International Crimes Tribunal ordered hanging of Nizami on Oct 29, 2014, for murders and rapes in Pabna and mass killing of intellectuals during the 1971 Liberation War.

The four-member appeals bench headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha has upheld the death penalty.

“The evidence presented before the court were fake. The Pakistani military personnel who were involved in these crimes have been let go without trials. The accused [Nizami] cannot be hanged just because he was an associate to them," said Khandaker Mahbub.
