Three youths attacked Father Luke Sarkar, 50, at his home at the municipality’s Schoolparha area on Monday morning, said the assistant superintendent of police of Ishwardi Circle.

Sarkar is the priest at the local Baptist Mission’s Faith Bible Church of God.

Sarkar managed to escape with a cut on his throat, SMA Jahid said. He went home after receiving treatment at Pabna Sadar Hospital.

The ASP told bdnews24.com: “Some radical militant group might have carried out this attack. No arrest has been made yet, but investigation is on.”

Sarkar said about two weeks ago, two youths had called him up to say they were interested about listening to his sermons.

Those two along with another youth came to his home unannounced on Monday morning.

They came riding a motorcycle, he said, adding that he did not know their identities.

“The three sat on the drawing room for a while. Then they suddenly attacked me and tried to slit my throat with a knife.”

“I bit a hand of one of them and screamed for help. They fled on foot abandoning the motorcycle when my wife and neighbours rushed to the scene,” said the priest.

Sarkar’s family lives as tenants in the house of Monirul Islam Monir at Ishwardi.

Apart from being a priest at the church, Sarkar also practices homeopathy.
