An Ashuganj unit and four rental plants, connected to the transformer, ceased operations after it caught fire on Friday evening, said the plant’s acting Managing Director Sajjadur Rahman.

“Production at Ashuganj plant’s unit No. 5 and four rental plants is stopped at the moment,” he told bdnews24.com.

The Ashuganj unit has a 150MW capacity, while the rest – United Power, Midland Power, Precision Power, and Aggreko Power – has a combined capacity of 254MW.

Power produced by these units is fed to the national grid through the transformer which exploded due to a “technical glitch”, Rahman said.

He added that none of the units had been damaged and that they were switched off automatically after the explosion as a precaution.

Fire fighters put out the flame around 9pm.

Ashuganj plant official Rahman hoped the units would resume production “soon”.
