State minister says 120 million people in Bangladesh now have electricity

Around 120 million people in Bangladesh currently have access to electricity, says State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid.

Replying to a question in Parliament by MP Md Shamsul Haque Tuku, the minister on Sunday said 74 percent of the country's population now have electricity.
 
"We are determined to ensure that every Bangladesh national has access to electricity by 2021," Hamid said.
 
The government has set a target of producing 24,000 megawatts of electricity by 2021.

Bangladesh currently generates 13,000 MW of electricity every day. 
 
Replying to another question from Awami League MP Mustafizur Rahaman Chowdhury, Hamid said the current annual demand for natural gas in Bangladesh was 1,076 billion cubic feet.
 
The daily production was around 2,700 million cubic feet and it was sold at Tk 192 per 1,000 cubic feet, he added.
 
The minister at the time also informed Parliament about the current buying and selling rate of different fuel oils.
 
He said diesel was imported at Tk 50.67 per litre and sold at Tk 68; kerosene was imported at Tk 51.04 and sold at Tk 68.
 
According to him, octane is imported at Tk 68.69 and sold at Tk 99; furnace oil is imported at Tk 38.44 and sold at Tk 60; and Jet A-1 is imported at Tk 50.61 and sold at Tk 67.
