Kotwali police OC Shikder Akkas Ali said the incident could have taken place in the early hours of Friday.

Helal Uddin, who hails from Jamalpur’s Dewanganj, was assigned to the Eight Engineering Battalion of the Bangladesh Army.

Shikder said they had sent in Sub-Inspector Miraj Mossadeq in the morning. He went to the spot with an executive magistrate later.

Duty officer Manjur Ali Khan told bdnews24.com that Helal and eight other soldiers lived in a room in the barracks.

“He was taken to the Combined Military Hospital around 4am where he was declared dead.”

Although there were unconfirmed reports that another inmate of the room had gone missing after the incident, the Jessore Cantonment authorities declined to comment on the matter.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Bhashkar Saha told bdnews24.com, “It looks like it could be a case of suicide. We will investigate the matter in our way while the army authorities will do theirs.”

He added that the trooper’s body had been sent to the Jessore General Hospital morgue.
