Protest messages flood blogger Niloy’s Facebook page after his murder

Blogger Niladri Chatterjee Niloy’s Facebook wall has been deluged with posts anger and protest right after the news of his murder spread.

Some expressed condolences, some shared their helplessness while others raised question about the security of free thinkers in Bangladesh.

Unknown assailants hacked Niloy to death in his flat at North Gorhan in Dhaka at Friday noon.

After the news spread on social networking sites, his friends and followers initially could not believe it and posted seeking confirmation about the incident.

Niloy used different blogs and social networking sites as Niloy Neel.

He used to blog against communalism and fundamentalism under this name on website ‘Istishon’ (Station).

He shared Surma Mehjabeen’s post on Facebook at 1:08pm. He was killed a few minutes later.

At 1:59 pm, one Muhammad Asif wrote on his Facebook wall, “Brother, brother, brother…”

Shahidul Shahed wrote, “Nothing is left to say, brother.”

Many a people also expressed their dissent on Facebook and blogs.

Some said Niloy had failed to file a general diary (GD) with the police station three months ago.

One Niloy Sohban shared slain Neel’s May 15 post on the matter.

Another one wrote from the account of Andha Biswashi, “I now hate even to identify myself as a citizen of the country of impunity.”

He continued, “There is no strength left to see the dead bodies of the loved ones constantly. Better the government (should) say how many more bodies it requires to begin the trial process.

“Brother Niloy, the pen would never stop, I swear.”

Abrisha Abir wrote: “It’s your misfortune that you were born in this country. Your misfortune is that you learned to think.”

“It’s certain that your murder would not be tried.”

Anwar Hossain wrote, “Niloy, I’ve drawn some meaningless tears on your wall.”

Different organisations issued statements demanding arrest of the assailants.
