Razzak’s neighbours in the village in Natore are happy as well.

His wife Asma Begum spoke to reporters on Thursday afternoon at their house in Barhbarhia village under Singrha Upazila with their newborn on the lap.

A happy Asma said she was waiting for her husband’s return home so that she could put the baby in his arms. “My other children are waiting to hug their father.”

Myanmar’s Border Guard Police (BGP) returned Razzak on Thursday, eight days after his abduction from the Naf River in Cox’s Bazar during a shootout.

He was handed over to the BGB in the afternoon after a flag meeting between the two forces at Maungdaw across the border in Myanmar.

Asma said her two children had been glued to the TV set to see their father and get updates on his release.

The couple’s eldest son ‘Raqibul’ said he and his sister ‘Faria’ had prayed a lot for the return of their father. “Allah has responded to our prayers,” he added.

Razzak’s mother Bulbuli Begum said christening and other rituals for the newborn would be done after he returned home.

She said they had already begun preparations for the function.

Razzak’s father Tofazzal Hossain thanked the government and the BGB for their efforts to secure his son’s release.

He also demanded punishment for the BGP members who abducted his son.

Razzak’s relatives and neighbours were found to have been visiting his house in groups on Thursday afternoon. They shared the joy of the BGB man’s family.

Neighbour Ayen Uddin said everyone in the village liked Razzak very much and was waiting to see him back.

Razzak was abducted following what Dhaka described as a shootout on the Naf River at Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf on Jun 17 between border patrols.

Another BGB soldier was shot in the incident caused by a “misunderstanding”, while Razzak was abducted by the BGP.

The foreign ministry summoned Myanmar’s envoy in Dhaka the next day and asked him for action to secure the release of the BGB soldier as fast as possible.

Despite several calls from the BGB to its counterpart to hold flag meetings, it was delayed as the Myanmar foreign ministry did not send directives to the border force.

There was no information on Razzak’s condition but two photographs uploaded on the BGP’s Facebook page showed him bloodied and handcuffed.

The pictures went viral on the social media, triggering a flurry of criticisms.

A Bangladesh MP came down hard on the issue in Parliament.

Amidst all this, Razzak’s wife gave birth to the couple’s third child on Sunday.
