She has sent a condolence message to her Nepalese counterpart Sushil Koirala.

Her press wing said, the prime minister recalled Thapa’s contribution to Nepal’s democracy.

"He was a long standing and true friend of Bangladesh,” Hasina said in the message on Friday. “He earned respects and affection of the people and the political leadership of Bangladesh."

The five-time Nepalese prime minister lost a battle with cancer on Thursday at a hospital in New Delhi at the age of 87.

His political career spanned over 50 years.

Hasina said Thapa’s demise would create a void in the region’s political arena.

She prayed for salvation of his departed soul and offered sympathies to the people of Nepal.
