25 die after bus hits trees at Faridpur’s Bhanga

At least 25 people have died after a Barisal-bound bus of Sonartari Paribahan rammed into a number of trees near Koidubi, in Faridpur’s Bhanga Upazila.

The accident occurred around 1:15 am on Thursday on the Barisal-Dhaka highway when the bus from Dhaka lost control and hit a number of trees, Assistant Superintendent of Highway Police Belal Hossain told bdnews24.com.
The deceased include 20 men and 5 women.
Twenty-two people injured in the accident have been taken to the Bhanga Upazila Health Complex and Faridpur Medical College Hospotal, Assistant Director of Faridpur Fire Service Shamsuzzoha told bdnews24.com.
Quoting the injured passengers, he said, “The driver lost control of the speeding bus and it rammed into a roadside tree. Flung by the impact the bus hit a number of other trees and overturned. Twenty-two passengers died on the spot. Two others were declared dead after the injured were taken to the hospitals.”
Bhanga and Faridpur fire service, highway police, and local police were involved in the rescue work operations.
Belal Hossain said there were more than 50 people onboard. The bodies have been kept at the Bhanga Police Station.
Faridpur Deputy Commissioner Sardar Sarafat Ali visited the accident site in the morning and announced an immediate relief of Tk 10,000 for each of the families of the dead.
He also said that the district administration would bear the treatment cost of the injured.
A three-member committee has been formed, headed by Additional Deputy Commissioner Abdur Rashid, to probe the incident, he added.
