The 45-year-old Krishna Kaberi died on Tuesday morning at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where she was taken after Monday night’s attack left her injured and burnt.

BRTA Deputy Director Shitangshu Shekhar Biswas, and two of his daughters, aged 15 and 8 years, were also injured in the 9pm attack in his flat at Mohammadpur’s Iqbal Road.

They are being treated in a private hospital.

OC of Mohammadpur Police Station Azizul Haque, quoting the victims, told bdnews24.com: “Shitangshu’s birthday was on Monday. A known associate came to their residence with cake, sweets and flowers.

“The cake along with candles were set up on the dining table.

“The youth suddenly pulled out a hammer and hit Shitangshu in the head. He also attacked the wife and two daughters when they tried to save Shitangshu. He then fled.”

OC Haque continued: “Kaberi fell on the cake and her clothes caught fire from the candles. She started running around the room to put it out.

“At one point, she sat on the sofa to stub out the flames. But it also caught fire and the blaze spread through the room.”

The police officer said the BRTA deputy director and his daughters ran to the adjoining flat of Engineer Saber Ahmed.

Ahmed told bdnews24.com that he opened the door to find a bloodied Shitangshu and his daughters. He took them inside. One of the daughters urged him to try and save their mother.

“We went to their home and found it on fire. The room was filled with smoke. We carried in water from my flat and tried to douse the fire.

“We found Krishna (Kaberi) in a burnt and bloody condition beside the curtains.”

He continued that the BRTA official, even in that state, named one ‘Jahirul Islam’ as responsible for the attack.

The police official said they talked with Shitangshu and his daughters and found that ‘Jahir’, manager of a broker house named Haji Ahmed Securities, was responsible for  the attack.

“We are still not sure why the attack happened but we are trying to arrest Jahir.”
