Mongla police’s Assistant Sub-inspector (ASI) Uttam Chatterjee said around a hundred workers working at the site were wounded when the accident occurred on Thursday.

Some of the injured have been rescued and sent to nearby hospitals.

Many more are feared trapped beneath the debris of the cement factory, he said.

Several media reported the death of three, quoting local sources, but ASI Chatterjee could not confirm.

Mongla Upazila Health Complex’s resident doctor Asabullahil Ghalib said he saw three bodies at Mongla Port Hospital when he went there.

“Doctor of Mongla Port Hospital Ruhul Amin told me that three bodies have been taken there and another 22-23 people have been admitted with injuries.”

Former vice-chairman of Mongla Upazila Nur Alam also confirmed reports of three deaths. Quoting locals, he told bdnews24.com 15 to 20 injured were taken to Khulna Medical College and Hospital.

Bagerhat Fire Station’s in-charge Shahidul Islam said their units had rushed to the accident scene.

He, however, failed to give any details of casualties.
