Remain alert against terrorism and militancy: PM to army

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked the army to remain alert against terrorism and militancy .

She says they not only impact adversely on development but also constitute a threat to sovereignty and law and order.

She was speaking at the flag-hoisting ceremony of the newly formed 10th Infantry Division of the Bangladesh Army at Ramu Cantonment in Cox’s Bazar on Sunday.

Hasina urged the armed forces to be prepared for threats in any form to protect the country’s democracy and uphold  the constitution.

The 1780-acre cantonment at Ramu , the home of the newly-raised 10th Division, is set amidst hills and sea in a coastal frontier of great geo-strategic importance . 

“This area has history of ethnic and religious strife and the army’s new infantry division has been located here with that in mind.

“The initiative has been taken to increase the army’s capability, especially in protecting the new maritime boundary,” Hasina said.

She added that the government will continue its work to develop and modernise the armed forces.

Army chief General Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan and the 10th Infantry Division’s Commanding Officer Major General Ataur Halim Sorowar Hasan greeted the prime minister on her arrival to Ramu.
